The Library and Independent
Learning Centre are at the heart of the successful teaching and
learning for which Tadcaster Grammar School is well-known. Now
established following re-furbishment and re-organisation, the
Library/ILC provides opportunities for all students to work on
projects and coursework tasks set by their teachers as well as
to pursue their own interests and choice of personal reading
The Fiction Library
This comfortable room offers students the opportunity to
choose from a very wide range of the best of literature for
young people and to enjoy their reading in a pleasant and
tranquil atmosphere. All students in Key Stage Three (Years 7 -
9) visit the Fiction Library regularly with their English
teacher and follow a programme of guided and supported reading,
leading to the award of certificates which recognise their
achievement. During such visits students are of course free to
visit the entire Library/ILC area.
The range of fiction available is to suit a wide range of tastes
and to encourage all students to read. You will therefore see
novels which will be more appropriate to older students.
Guidance and advice are given to students, and we maintain that
we try to reflect what is best in the wide range of writing now
available.
The Alice Library Automation System
This computer is the heart of the cataloguing and circulation
system. Apart from the main computer which you can see on the
main desk, there are two "Enquiry " stations, one in each part
of the Library/ILC. Students may use these to search for a
specific book or for the material we have to support their
projects or areas of study. Please feel free to try it out.
All students are issued with a Library/ILC card which includes a
bar-code to identify them to the "Alice" computer. Every book
and resource is also marked with a bar-code The system matches
them up when a book is issued and holds the information until
the book is returned. It allows us to issue reminders to
students for overdue books and to reserve books requested by
students.
At the entrance to the Library/ILC is an electronic gate which
reminds students if they have forgotten to have their book
recorded on the computer.
The Independent Learning Centre
In this part of the Library/ILC area are kept all the
non-fiction texts and resources which support all subjects
offered by the school at all levels. Clearly there are many
books, but please also note:
Periodicals
The Library/ILC subscribes to over fifty educational
periodicals selected by departments to support all subjects. In
general the ones in the ILC are for older students, and are
often very specific in their application; but in the Fiction
Library are a range of general interest titles suitable for
younger students.
Project Boxes
A wide range of general interest topics are supported through
the boxes stored by the window. These contain a range of
cuttings and leaflets on issues which are used by students in
the pursuit of coursework and other guided studies, as well as
for "browsing".
Photocopier
The photocopier is available for use by students to make
copies of material from books and the project boxes as well as
their own purposes. It is a well-used service by students at all
levels.
Computers
The computers in the Library/ILC are dedicated to supporting
the studies of students. There is a wide range of CD roms
available for use, including many that make learning seem like a
game. Please feel free to try them. The computers can be booked
for use by students during the day including at lunch-times.
Students also can have access to the Internet when supervised by
teachers. One of the computers is principally used for word
processing.
Book Club
The Library runs a book club which gives students the
opportunity to buy books from a bi-monthly selection. Details of
the list and order forms are circulated by the Library/ILC.
